PSIA becoming a more well-rounded organization dedicated to serving instructors educational AND quality of life needs is a win, win, win. The instructors, PSIA and the ski school/ski area will all benefit.
First by PSIA advocating for, say, minimum wage for EVERY HOUR an instructor is asked to be at the mountain….while keeping the areas same pay structure when teaching, …or by supporting tasteful informational campaigns that tipping your instructor is appreciated, instructors wont struggle so desperately to make ends meet. Instructors can survive the winter and be anxious to return next year. Instructors win.
Second, as a result, PSIA will benefit by getting more new members because they realize that PSIA actually cares about them and works on their behalf. Both new and existing members will be better engaged and active in the organization instead of neutral, ambivalent, cynical or resentful. PSIA wins.
Third, because instructors return every year to a job they love and can make a living at, turnover will be drastically reduced and ski schools won’t have to beg for staff and train dozens of new instructors every year. Ski school directors can pick the two best candidates from the pool of 20 applicants instead of needing to hire all 20 and then recruiting again mid-season as 10 of those 20 quit because they’re losing money or just get burnt out. As the pool of returning instructors grows a better teaching product/experience is provided to the public. Ski school directors and ski areas win.
Let's make PSIA better
